Lewis Carrier - Equissage Pulse and Champion Dressage Horses
Lewis Carrier is an international dressage rider, coach, and trainer who takes on competitions across the world. Riding for Team GB at the London World Internationals and winning the British Dressage National Championships, Lewis knows what it takes to produce a Grand Prix dressage horse, and Equissage Pulse is at the heart of his horse’s daily routine.
“I first discovered Equissage back in 2008, when my trainer, Diana Fisher, was using an Equissage pad on her top horse. And I wondered what it was, and why she was using it. She told me she used it to support their performance, improve blood flow and help her horse to warm up, before riding.”
Equissage Pulse massage pad and the handheld unit have a huge range of uses, and many owners use them to support specific issues such as arthritis, kissing spine, tendon and ligament issues, or even foot abscesses. But, like many, Lewis doesn’t use it for a particular problem, but as a daily support for his horses.
“I've been very lucky with my horses that I haven’t had to use my Equissage for a particular problem. But for me, it’s about enhancing their performance. It helps the horses warm up before they’re ridden by enhancing circulation, getting them ready to work.”
Equissage is easy to use at home or when out competing, and Lewis takes his away with him.
“I use my Equissage Pulse every single day on every single horse. They have it on for around half an hour each, and I use all three different settings on different days. Generally, they have it on just before they get tacked up to be ridden. At shows and competitions, it's a crucial part of their routine to get ready and warmed up. I use it exactly the same at home as at competitions—I want them to have the exact same routine and benefits when they're at a show.”
Lewis uses his Equissage Pulse on all of his horses, but there are some in particular that he feels benefit hugely from its clinically proven effects.
“There are definitely particular horses that have benefited massively from the Equissage Pulse, especially those horses that are maybe a bit cold-backed or are slower to warm up and get going. The Equissage certainly helps the horses relax, helps blood flow, and helps them to warm up—they feel much softer and relaxed when you first get on.”
“Top dressage horses are like Olympic-level sprinters. They need their energy and muscles to work for a short burst of time—the five or six minutes of a dressage test. Unlike other disciplines where the horses need endurance with dressage, the horses need their energy and their muscles to work hard for a short space of time. Dressage horses need a long time to warm up to make sure that they are at peak performance for that five or six minutes. The Equissage Pulse really helps them with that warm-up.”
